Lansing Clinches the First Half with Win over Captains

Lake County Captains News Release


(Lansing, MI) - The Lansing Lugnuts (42-19) clinched the first half Midwest League Eastern Division Championship on Saturday night in Lansing, Michigan. The Lugnuts beat the Lake County Captains (29-32) by a score of 6-5. Lansing used a six run first inning to achieve the division title. The Lugnuts drew three walks and used a hit by a pitch to fuel the big inning. Lansing also smacked four hits in the inning including a single by Kevin Pillar, which opened the scoring. The Lugnuts led 6-0 after one inning of play.

Lake County scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Captains used a lead off single by Jordan Smith, a walk by Jerrud Sabourin, and a double by Bryson Myles to get on the board and then Alex Lavisky doubled home both Sabourin and Myles to make the score 6-3.

Lake County scored a run in the top half of the fifth inning when Luigi Rodriguez doubled and moved to third on a throwing error. Luigi later scored on a Nick Bartolone groundout and the score was 6-4 Lansing. The Captains came even closer in the seventh inning when the pushed across another run When Bartolone doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third base on a wild pitch. Pinch hitter Alex Monsalve singled up the middle and Bartolone scored making the score 6-5 Lugnuts. 6-5 was the Final.

LHP David Rollins (1-1) was the starter for the Lugnuts and got the win. Rollings pitched five innings allowing six hits, four runs, three were earned he walked two and struck out five. Eric Brown allowed one earned run in three innings pitched and he struck out two. Ajay Meyer earned his 19th save of the season as the Lugnuts clinched the division.

LHP Elvis Araujo (2-5) got the start and took the loss for the Captains. Araujo lasted just two thirds of an inning and allowed all six runs and all were earned. He walked three and struck out one and also hit a batter. The Captains bullpen pitched seven and one third innings and did not allow a run and only surrendered two hits in relief and fanned six. Mason Radeke, Manny Carmona and Rob Nixon were the pitchers used by manager David Wallace.

The Captains will be back in action Sunday afternoon in Lansing, Michigan. On Sunday, first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM. This is the final road trip of the first half for Lake County. Lake County will send RHP Joe Colon (5-5, 2.78) to the mound against RHP Marcus Walden (4-1, 2.70) for Lansing.
