Frisco RoughRiders News Release
MIDLAND, TEXAS - Sean Manaea threw seven shutout frames and Anthony Aliotti's two-run homer was the difference maker as the Midland RockHounds defeated the Frisco RoughRiders, 2-1, on Saturday night at Security Bank Ballpark. Alex Burg led off the ninth with a home run, but the Riders couldn't come back from the 2-0 hole.
The RockHounds broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning. Chad Pinder led off the bottom half of the frame with a double and Aliotti followed with a two-run homer off of Juan Grullon to give Midland the 2-0 lead.
Trailing 2-0 in the ninth, Brendan McCurry gave up a leadoff long ball to Burg to cut the Midland lead in half. The solo-shot was the catcher's seventh since joining Frisco.
Manaea (5-1) was dominant for the Hounds all evening. The left-hander earned the win over seven scoreless innings of work. He struck out seven batters and allowed only three hits.
Frisco had several chances to break through. Ryan Cordell was stranded at third base after a one-out double in the first. In the third frame Luis Mendez led off with a single, but a double play and strikeout ended the threat. Zach Cone reached first on an error to start the seventh and worked his way around to third base. Manaea's seventh strikeout of the game ended the frame and the Riders were unable to capitalize.
Victor Payano earned a no decision in his five inning effort for Frisco. The lefty did not allow a run on five hits. Grullon (1-3) was credited with the loss, after he allowed the two-run homer to Aliotti in the sixth.
McCurry gave up the ninth inning homer to Burg, but retired the next three batters to earn his fourth save for Midland and close out the 2-1 victory for the Hounds.
The Riders send RHP Phil Irwin to the mound in Sunday afternoon's contest. Midland counters with RHP Chris Jensen in the 2:00 start. Frisco returns to Dr Pepper Ballpark on Saturday, September 5 for the final home stand of the season. The first 2,000 fans at Saturday's game will receive a free RoughRiders football!
