Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
MIDLAND, TX - Danry Vasquez, A.J. Reed, Jon Kemmer and Roberto Pena each notched three RBIs Friday night as Corpus Christi pummeled the RockHounds 17-6 in the series finale at Security Bank Ballpark.
The Hooks (33-27, 81-49) totaled 21 hits and seven walks on the night, setting a season-high for runs in a game.
The RockHounds (41-19, 76-54) have won 10 of their last 13 series. The three exceptions were splits forced by Corpus Christi.
With Midland ahead 3-0 in the third, Vasquez sparked the offense with a double to left field, chasing Chan-Jong Moon from first base. The frame netted five runs for the Hooks, culminating with a two-run double off the bat of Kemmer.
Corpus Christ made it 8-3 in the fifth. Reed opened with a missile which landed atop the berm in right field for his minor-league leading 31st home run. Following one-out singles by Jack Mayfield and Conrad Gregor, Pena laced a two-run double down the left-field line, knocking Parker Frazier (4-2) out of the game.
Francis Martes, making his Double-A debut, yielded six runs on seven hits over four and two-thirds innings. A two-run home run by Renato Nunez in the second and Matt Olson's three-run blast in the fifth accounted for most of the damage.
The Hooks surged for nine runs over the final four frames. The ninth featured five hits, including doubles by Reed, Gregor and Pena. The latter two were hit off infielder Wade Kirkland.
Each man in Corpus Christi's lineup recorded a hit with Reed and Mayfield pulling down four apiece.
Travis Ballew, Josh Fields and Chris Cotton combined for four and two-thirds innings of shutout relief. Ballew (4-5) earned the victory and Cotton garnered the save (5) after retiring the first man he faced to escape a bases-loaded jam in the seventh.
The Hooks return to Whataburger Field for a seven-game homestand, beginning Saturday night. Edison Frias (2-1, 6.97) draws San Antonio right-hander Ronald Herrera (3-0, 3.55). Astros outfielder George Springer is slated to join Corpus Christi on a rehab assignment. First pitch 7:05 and gates open at 5:30 as the first 2,500 fans receive Hooks Ponchos from the Coastal Bend Chevy Dealers.
