Bums swept away in double header loss

SAUGET, IL ¡V The Traverse City Beach Bums were swept by the Gateway Grizzlies in a doubleheader on Thursday night at GCS Ballpark, losing 2-1 in extra innings in the opener and dropping a 2-0 decision in the finale.

GAME ONE: GATEWAY 2, TRAVERSE CITY 1 (Nine Innings) It took extra innings to decide the opener as the Beach Bums played in their fifth straight one-run contest, falling to Gateway 2-1.

Gateway grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Beach Bums starter Brett Bostelman had retired the first 10 batters of the game before Stephen Holdren connected on his 12th homer of the season, a blast down the line in right to give the Grizzlies a 1-0 edge.

The Beach Bums rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Mike Epping led off with a single against Gateway starter Brandon Williams. Epping was sacrificed to second by Zack Kalter and scored the tying run when Kyle Maunus singled up the middle.

Gateway won the game in the bottom of the ninth, walking off for the second straight time by scoring an unearned run. Stephen Holdren began the frame by reaching on an infield single. Charlie Lisk followed with a single to place runners on first and second. Mike Breyman sent a chopper to the right side that Steve Young turned one out on, but the return throw was wide escaping first base and enabling Holdren to cross with the winning run.

Brett Bostelman was the Player of the Game in the opener. Traverse City¡¦s starting pitcher threw seven innings and allowed just one run on two hits while walking none and striking out four. Ted Gjeldum threw the final 1.1 innings and took the loss.

The teams combined for just nine hits in the opener, Traverse City had five of those. Steve Young and Mike Epping each finished with a pair of hits in the defeat.

GAME TWO: GATEWAY 2, TRAVERSE CITY 0 Gateway shutout the Beach Bums 2-0 in the nightcap to sweep the twin bill.

Gateway scored the only two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning off of Traverse City reliever Pete McEneaney. Stephen Holdren led off with a single and scored on a triple by Mike Breyman. Breyman came across when Michael Campbell lifted a sacrifice fly.

The Beach Bums were limited to just three hits but had the tying runs on base in the top of the seventh as Zack Kalter singled and Eric Newton followed with a walk. Game one winner Joel Boeschen was summoned from the bullpen to tally the save as he recorded the final two outs.

Traverse City starter Steve Roberts lasted only three innings but did not allow a run. He scattered three hits while walking four and striking out four. Jared Locke was the Beach Bums Player of the Game after tossing 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.

The Beach Bums (34-31) will look to avoid the sweep in the finale of the series tomorrow night at 8:05 pm. LHP Weston Curles (1-2, 3.80) will get the ball for the Beach Bums opposite RHP Justin Lilly (5-2, 3.51).
