'Bums rally falls short

Traverse City Beach Bums News Release


TRAVERSE CITY, MI ¡V The Traverse City Beach Bums rallied from a 3-0 deficit, but fell 5-3 in the opener of a three-game series at Wuerfel Park on Thursday night.

Nate Messner gave Washington a 1-0 lead with a solo homer just to the left of the hitter¡¦s eye in center field leading off the top of the second. Two more runs came across in the third inning as Washington opened a 3-0 edge. One run scored on a balk by Beach Bums starter Ryan Gehring, the other came in on a delayed double steal.

Both pitchers settled down until the Beach Bums plated their first run in the sixth. Washington¡¦s J.J. Hollenbeck retired eight straight but Mike Goetz broke up the string by doubling to lead off the sixth. Mike Epping doubled in Goetz to pull the Beach Bums within 3-1. Hollenbeck pitched 5.2 innings and did not factor in the decision.

Traverse City rallied to tie the game in the seventh against the Washington bullpen. Zack Kalter led off with a single and Brad Miller followed with a double off of reliever Matt Restivo to pull within 3-2. Restivo walked three straight hitters including Mike Epping with the bases loaded.

Washington took the lead in the eighth when Chris Cararra hit his first homer of the season off of Ryan Gehring. Gehring had retired 13 straight prior to the homerun. The Wild Things made it a 5-3 lead with a run in the ninth against Ted Gjeldum.

The Beach Bums finished with six hits, two of which came off the bat of Brad Miller who was 2-for-4. Mike Epping was chosen as the Beach Bums Player of the Game after driving in a pair of runs and finishing 1-for-3 with two walks. Mike Goetz, Zack Kalter, and Patrick Perry also finished with hits.

The Beach Bums (31-27) will continue the series with Washington tomorrow night at 7:05 pm. RHP Brett Bostelman (4-3, 3.86) starts for Traverse City while Washington sends All-Star Mike Schellinger (7-3, 2.54).
