Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - In a game that ended after the sixth inning, due to rain, the Traverse City Beach Bums(8-16) lost a high-scoring affair to the Joliet Slammers(14-12), 12-10.

Joliet hopped off of the bus and onto the scoreboard, early in the first inning, when Boo Vazquez hit an RBI double and Jake Gronsky hit an RBI single, taking a 2-0 lead. That seemed to wake up the Beach Bums who got on a big roll in the bottom of the inning.

In the Bums half of the first, they brought twelve men to the plate in an eight run explosion. Ryan Bottger and Steven Patterson started with singles. Jose Vargas drove in Bottger with a single to get the scoring started. After Will Kengor walked, Giancarlo Brugnoni rocked a two run double to right, giving Traverse City the 3-2 lead. Two batters later, Brandon Thomasson walked, then Gaby Juarbe singled in another run. Jeff DeBlieux next came to the plate and smacked a two run single, scoring Brugnoni and Thomasson. DeBlieux then stole second and when the catcher's throw got away, Juarbe scored from third. Bottger came to the plate again, driving a fly ball to right, scoring DeBlieux on the sacrifice to finish the offense for the inning.

Joliet started to chip away at the Bums' lead in the top of the second, when both Alfredo Rodriguez and Vazquez, each hit RBI singles. After a scoreless third, the Slammers got two more in the top of the fourth on sacrifice fly's by Vazquez and Carter Bell, bringing them with two.

The Beach Bums got the four run lead back in the bottom of the frame, starting when Bottger reached on an error. Vargas walked two batters later and Kengor grounded into a fielder's choice, eliminating Vargas at second and moving Bottger to third. Giancarlo Brugnoni extended the inning with a walk then Casey Rodrigue slipped a two run single to right, scoring Bottger and Kengor, and the Bums led 10-6.

Joliet got back within two in the fifth when Melvin Rodriguez walked and Joe Staley hit a two run homer over the centerfield wall, his second of the season. In the top of the sixth, Vazquez singled, Bell reached on an error, and Flores walked, to load the bases with nobody out. Gronsky stepped to the plate and hit a grand slam to left, for his 2nd homer of the season, giving Joliet the lead. After a scoreless bottom of the inning, and the sky getting darker, the decision was made to halt the game for a delay. Not long after, when the rains began, the game was called.

Brent Choban gets the win for Joliet, giving up just one hit in two innings of work, striking out three, to improve to 2-3. Benjamin Libuda, who pitched the deciding sixth inning, gets the loss to drop to 1-2.

The Beach Bums and Joliet Slammers continue this three game series with game two tomorrow night. Taking the mound for the Bums is Jacob Lanning while Sean Townsley gets the start for Joliet.
