Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners continued their winning ways and remained unbeaten on their road trip with their sixth straight win and seventh in their last eight games overall with a 5-4 victory over the River City Rascals on Friday night at CarShield Field in O'Fallon.

The Miners jumped in front right away in the top of the first- after a leadoff double by Aaron Gates, two batters later, Craig Massey smacked a two-run homer over the high right-field wall to put Southern Illinois 2-0 on Rascals starter Tim Koons. Alex De Leon then crushed a home run of his own, a solo shot in going back-to-back with Massey for a 3-0 lead for Dan Ludwig on the mound. The Rascals would score a run of their own in the bottom of the first, but the Miners got it back on an RBI groundout by Gates.

River City would then rally in the third inning for another run to make it 4-2 before a two-run, game-tying homer by Kyle Gaedele in the fourth knotted the score at 4-4. The Rascals would put runners on the corners with a double and single that same inning, but Ludwig bore down, striking out Alexi Colon before a pop-out by Johnny Morales and a fielder's choice by Josh Ludy kept the game tied through four innings.

Neither team got much going in the fifth or sixth, and the Miners would take the lead in the top half of the seventh. After Julius Gaines and De Leon hit singles, Nolan Earley stepped up with a go-ahead RBI single to right-center to make the score 5-4. The Southern Illinois bullpen would hold the fort with scoreless innings from Chris DeBoo and Kyle Tinius, helped out by the defense, which cut down the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh thanks to Gates and Gaines teaming up on the throws from the outfield after a double by Jason Merjano. Gaines also started a double-play grounder that ended the eighth inning after a leadoff walk.

Evan Mott came in and worked a perfect ninth inning for the save as the Miners improved to 15-9 on the season with their sixth consecutive victory, with Carson Goldsmith getting the win in relief in his Miners debut.

The Miners will send Rick Teasley to the mound for the second game of the four-game series on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m., opposed by River City right-hander Joe Scanio.
