Bums drop wild one to Florence

Traverse City Beach Bums News Release


FLORENCE, KY - The Traverse City Beach Bums came up on the short end of an 8-6 decision in a wild back and forth affair at Champion Window Field on Monday night.

Traverse City opened the scoring in the top of the second by scoring an unearned run to grab a 1-0 lead. Mike Epping reached on an error to begin the frame and then stole second and third on consecutive pitches from Florence starter Everett Saul. Joe Blackburn singled in Epping for his third RBI of the season.

Florence tied the game without the advantage of a hit against Beach Bums starter J.T. King in the bottom of the inning. King walked three and the tying run scored on an RBI groundout by Eddie Gonzalez. With the bases loaded in the top of the third, Mike Epping gave the Beach Bums a 2-1 lead with an RBI fielder's choice.

Two Freedom runs in the bottom of the third gave Florence their first lead at 3-2. Angel Molina drove in a run with a groundout and Nick Salotti drove in a run with a single. The Beach Bums came back to tie the score in the fourth. Joe Blackburn led off with a triple and scored when Jeff Brown reached on an error.

Florence opened a 6-3 lead by scoring once in the fourth and twice in the fifth inning. Tim Grogan drove in the fourth inning run with a single. Eddie Gonzalez drove in two runs with a single in the fifth off of Jared Locke. Starter J.T. King pitched only four innings for the Beach Bums but not factor in the decision.

Jeff Brown connected on his first homer of the season with two outs in the sixth to pull the Beach Bums within 6-4. Traverse City scored twice in the seventh to tie the game. Mike Goetz singled to start the frame and moved to second on an error. Steve Young pulled the Beach Bums within a run with a base hit. Kyle Maunus tied the game with a one-out triple to score Young. The Freedom won the game with two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth. Angel Molina lifted a two-out fly ball that dropped out of Brad Roblin's glove and scored two runs.

Steve Young finished 3-for-4 with a run, a stolen base, and an RBI to earn Beach Bums Player of the Game honors. Traverse City finished with 11 hits in the game and Mike Goetz, Joe Blackburn, and Jeff Brown each tallied a pair of hits.

The Beach Bums (21-18) head to Kalamazoo for a three-game series with the East Division leading Kings at Homer Stryker Field. RHP Brett Bostelman (2-3, 4.28) will start the series opener against Kalamazoo's RHP Joe DiPietro (0-3, 4.68). The game can be heard live on The Fox FM beginning with the Labatt Blue On Deck Show at 6:45 pm.
