Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI ¡V The Traverse City Beach Bums posted their second straight shutout at home, blanking the River City Rascals 3-0 at Wuerfel Park on Tuesday in the opener of a three-game set. The shutout was the 11th of the season for the Beach Bums, establishing a new team record.
David Nathanson made his return to the rotation after being activated from injured reserve, throwing seven shutout innings in his first start since August 2. He allowed only two hits while walking one, hitting one, and striking out five to pick up his 10th win of the season. Nathanson carried a no-hitter into the sixth, working 5.2 hitless innings before a two-out error led to an infield single by Luke Barganier. He had retired 10 straight before the error.
The Beach Bums gave Nathanson the only runs he would need in the fourth inning by scoring a pair off of River City starter Scott Fogelson, who lost his seventh career game against Traverse City. Steve Young led off the inning with a double and moved to third as Zack Kalter beat out a sacrifice attempt for an infield hit. Kyle Maunus drove home the first run with an RBI groundout. Kalter would score as he moved to third on a wild pitch and came in when River City catcher Andrew Sweet threw the ball into left.
Patrick Perry made it a 3-0 game with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. Zack Kalter and Kyle Maunus had singled in front of him. Perry was the last batter that Fogelson faced in the game.
Ted Gjeldum threw the eighth and Jeff Williams tossed the ninth to tally his 13th save of the year and further his franchise record for single season saves. Williams has saved the last three victories in the current five-game winning streak for the Beach Bums. The Beach Bums finished with seven hits in the game, Zack Kalter posted two of those.
