July 22, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY- On the brink of having their longest losing streak of the season, Connecticut received a youthful spark from the Giants #1 prospect to get by Binghamton 9-3 Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium.
With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, RHP-Madison Bumgarner delivered a game winning grand slam over the right centerfield wall, his first professional homerun of his young promising career to seal the Defenders first win in the best of four series.
Binghamton jumped ahead in the home half of the fourth when SS-Ruben Tejada became just the second person all season to take one over the wall against Bumgarner to give the B-Mets a 1-0 advantage.
All series long, Connecticut had been on the other side of the big inning but Wednesday proved to be different. After Bumgarner's big homer the Defenders weren't finished as 3B-Ramon Castro capped off the six run fifth with a two RBI double, Defenders led 6-2.
Connecticut would add two more in sixth with back to back RBI doubles by 2B-Brock Bond and CF-Mike McBryde only to tack on another in the eighth with a pinch hit solo jack by Adam Witter.
As good as he was with the bat going 2 for 3 with four RBI and two runs scored, Bumgarner (7-1) was even better with his arm. Bumgarner fired seven strong innings allowing just one earned run off of just three hits and struck out four while earning his team leading seventh victory.
B -Mets starter, LHP-Eric Niesen (1-5) suffered the loss allowing six earned runs off of five hits in five innings of work, walking a season high five and striking out five.
The Defenders will seek out another youthful spark and a series split tomorrow's finale as RHP-Tim Alderson (6-1) takes the hill against B-Mets RHP-Brad Holt (2-3) . First pitch is slated for 7:05pm from NYSEG Stadium. Fans can catch all the action starting with the Defenders Pre-Game Show at 6:50pm on the Defenders Flagship Station WICH 1310 AM or online at ctdefenders.com.
