Sea Dogs Sweep Rock Cats

(Game 1) New Britain, CT - Ryan Mullins went the distance, but his offense failed to provide run support and he was out-dueled by Portland's Felix Doubront as the Sea Dogs took the opening game of Wednesday night's doubleheader, 3-0.

Mullins (6-9) limited the Sea Dogs to three runs on eight hits through seven innings. He struck out six while walking one in one of his most impressive starts of the season. The Rock Cats failed to muster any run support for Mullins, though, as Doubrant blanked the Rock Cats through seven complete innings. Doubront (6-2) scattered four hits and struck out 10 with no walks.

The Sea Dogs scored in the third when Iggy Suarez opened the inning with a line drive single to center and Jason Place followed with a double to right. Suarez scored on a groundout by Juan Apodaca. Portland scored again in the fifth and the seventh on RBI singles by Josh Reddick.

(Game 2) New Britain, CT - In the nightcap, the Rock Cats continued to search for its missing offense to no avail as the Sea Dogs downed the ‘Cats, 5-1 to sweep the doubleheader.

Portland got on the board in the fourth when Jon Still delivered a single to center to knock in Jorge Jimenez, who led off the inning with a single, for a 1-0 lead. In the fifth, Ryan Kalish added an RBI double for the Sea Dogs.

Lars Anderson, the Boston Red Sox' top prospect, stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the seventh inning and delivered double that cleared the bases to put away the game.

Frank Mata tossed 3 2/3 solid innings in a spot start for the Rock Cats. He struck out four while allowing one run on two hits. Alex Burnett came on in relief and struggled with control, walking four batters in two innings. He also allowed one run on two hits.

Blake Maxwell fired five scoreless innings, limiting the Rock Cats to three hits.

The lone Rock Cats' run came on back-to-back doubles by Brian Dinkelman and Steve Singleton, with Singleton's line drive to left field knocking in Dinkelman in the seventh.

The Rock Cats take on the Sea Dogs in another doubleheader on Thursday (July 23) at 5:05 P.M. Both games will last seven innings, with the second game beginning approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the opener.
