Louisville Bats News Release

LOUISVILLE, KY- In game one, Louisville missed plenty of opportunities to score, as they left seven on base in a 5-2 loss to Durham in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday night. A sold-out crowd of 13,131 watched as the Bats fell in the shortened seven-inning game.

The Bats got on the board early, scoring a run in the bottom of the first. Centerfielder Chris Dickerson started the inning with a walk, and advanced to second on a single by the newly acquired Jorge Cantu. Cantu made his first appearance as a Bat after a trade earlier in the day sent Bats pitchers Brian Shackelford and Calvin Medlock to the Tampa organization and the Durham Bulls dugout. Dickerson eventually scored on an Aaron Herr sacrifice fly to right field.

Durham countered with two runs in the top of the second. The Bulls went ahead on a Jorge Valendia single to left field, scoring first basemen Joel Guzman. The Bulls would go on to add three more in the top of the fifth.

Louisville was led in hitting by left fielder Anderson Machado, who went 2-for-3 on the night. Three other Bats had one hit apiece.

Velandia and center fielder Jason Pridie led Durham in hitting, with two hits apiece and a RBI respectively.

Louisville starter Steve Kelly (1-5, 7.12) picked up the loss in 4.1 innings of work. Kelly surrendered five runs on eight hits, while striking out two.

Bulls starter Mitch Talbot (8-8, 4.78) secured the win, going five innings while giving up two runs on five hits.

In game two Louisville again fell, wasting a solid performance by starting pitcher Jason Kershner on the way to a 3-0 loss. On the season, the Bats are just 2-7 against the Bulls.

Durham's Jeremy Owens scored the first run of the game after he led off the top of the fifth with a double to deep left field. Owens advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jorge Velandia and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jon Weber. Joel Guzman hit a home run in the sixth that scored Justin Ruggiano and sealed the game for the Bulls.

Mike Prochaska (1-0, 0.90) shut down the Bats in five innings of work, giving up just two hits while picking up the victory. Chad Orvella pitched two hitless innings and earned the save (15) for Durham.

Kershner pitched four scoreless frames for Louisville, allowing only one hit while striking out five in a no-decision. Tyler Pelland (0-1, 10.80), who was called up today from Class AA Chattanooga, gave up two runs in one and two- thirds innings and took the loss.

Tomorrow the Bats and Bulls will play for the final time this regular season. RHP Tom Shearn (4-9, 4.65) is scheduled to pitch for Louisville against Durham's RHP Tony Peguero (2-3, 7.52). First pitch is scheduled for 6:15.
