Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Left fielder Michael Ryan blasted his team-leading 12th and 13th home runs of the season, while left-hander Michael Tejera fired his first complete game since 1998 as Indianapolis defeated Charlotte, 7-1, in front of 13,602 Saturday night at Victory Field.
The Indians improve to 54-52 overall and 31-23 at home, while the Knights fall to 49-59 on the season and 20-36 on the road. Sunday will be the Tribe's 251st consecutive day with a record of .500 or better.
Both of Ryan's (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI) homers were solo blasts to right. His first roundtripper knotted the contest in the second, while his second dinger gave Indianapolis a 2-1 lead in the sixth. The 30-year-old also smashed a pair of long balls on May 14 vs. Ottawa.
Tejera (9.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO), who needed just 107 pitches to get through all nine frames, improved to 5-2 with his third consecutive quality start. The performance also marked the third complete game of his 12-year professional career and the Tribe's first nine-inning CG since RHP Ron Chiavacci went the distance in a 7-0 blanking of Durham on Aug. 12, 2006.
Charlotte's lone run of the contest came in the second when SS Earl Snyder (3-for-3, 1 R) led off with a double to center, moved to third on 2B Tomas Perez's infield single and scored on DH Ernie Young's groundout.
The Indians padded their lead with three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Two runners came plateward on a double error in the seventh, while SS Don Kelly (2-for-4, 2 R, 1 RBI) trotted home on RF Adam Boeve's (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) RBI double in the eighth.
Knights LHP Carlos Vasquez (2.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) suffered the loss, falling to 2-1.
The two teams return to Victory Field on Sunday at 2 p.m., for the two-game series finale. LHP Heath Phillips is scheduled to start for Charlotte, while RHP Marty McLeary is expected to get the nod for Indianapolis.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 1:40 p.m.
It will be a Souvenir Sunday as the first 4,000 fans receive an Indians Baseball Card Set courtesy of Ivy Tech. Gates open at 12:30 p.m.
