Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - The Bulls were down by as many as four runs and did not hold the lead at any point until Brent Butler's two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a 5-5 tie and put the Bulls ahead for good as they downed the Toledo Mud Hens, 7-5 on Sunday evening at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Jeremy Owens played a key role in the comeback as he hit an RBI-triple, and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Ben Zobrist in the fifth inning to make the score 5-4. He then tied the game with an RBI-double in the seventh inning. RHP Scott Dohmann (4-1) retired the side in the top of the eighth inning to keep the game tied at five before Butler put the Bulls ahead in the bottom half of the inning. Dohmann then struck out the side in the ninth inning to secure the win.
The Mud Hens had jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage in the first inning on an RBI-single from Ryan Raburn, a sacrifice fly from Chris Shelton, and a two-run home run from Mike Hessman, but the Bulls started to chip away at the lead in the second inning when Joel Guzman hit a solo home run to center field to make the game 4-1. Kevin Hooper hit an RBI-single in the top of the fourth inning to give Toledo a four-run lead again, but B.J. Upton, who joined the Bulls today on a rehab assignment, responded with a solo home run to lead off the bottom half of the inning to pull the Bulls within three.
RHP Mitch Talbot started for the Bulls, working six innings and surrendering five runs, five hits, and four walks with seven strikeouts. For Toledo, RHP Jordan Tata gave up four runs, three hits, and two walks with three strikeouts in six innings of work, but RHP Anastacio Martinez (2-4) took the loss after giving up the tying run in the seventh inning and the game winning runs in the eighth inning.
The Bulls and Mud Hens will meet again on Monday night at 7 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. For tickets, go to www.durhambulls.com or call the box office at (919) 956-BULL.
