Braves Lose Heartbreaker

Indianapolis, IN - The Indianapolis Indians beat the Richmond Braves 8-7 Sunday at Victory Field. The Indians scored a run in the last of the ninth to win after the Braves tied the game with two runs in the top half. The Braves have lost four straight games, their second longest losing streak of the season.

The Braves struck first with a run in the second. Brent Lillibridge scored on an Iker Franco ground out after stealing second and third. The Indians scored three times in the third. Don Kelly and Michael Ryan drew bases-loaded walks. Russ Johnson knocked in a run with a sac fly. The Braves picked up a run in the fifth on a Larry Bigbie sac fly and tied the game in the sixth on a home run by Doug Clark. The Indians opened up a 5-3 lead in the home half when Carlos Maldonado scored on a throwing error and Don Kelly knocked in a run with a single. In the eighth Clark smacked his second home run of the game, a two-run shot, to tie the game at five.

Again the Indians came right back on a two-run double by Johnson to lead 7-5. Richmond tied the game in the ninth on a two-run homer by Martin Prado, his first of the season. The Indians won the game in the bottom half on a walk-off single by Kelly with two outs.

Jonah Bayliss picked up the win. Manny Acosta took the loss. Prado had three hits for the Braves. Kelly and Maldonado had three hits each for the Indians.

The Braves continue their road trip Monday at Columbus at 7:05. Jo-Jo Reyes will pitch for the Braves against John Lannan. The Braves return home July 4 vs. Syracuse.
