Oshawa Generals News Release
Sunday night the Oshawa Generals clinched the East Division with their win over the Kingston Frontenacs. Wednesday night they looked to stretch their lead against another East Division team, the Belleville Bulls. The Generals came into the contest with back-to-back wins over the weekend after losing to Peterborough on Thursday. The Bulls came into the game sitting in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with 44 points, seven behind the Mississauaga Steelheads for the 8th and final playoff spot. The Bulls had lost three straight games coming into Wednesday's contest, two of them at the hands of the Kingston Frontenacs.
The Generals jumped out to an early lead in the first period as rookie Owen McDade scored his first OHL goal just three minutes and seven seconds into the period. McDade has played 42 games this year and recorded three assists; his goal was assisted by Chris Carlisle and Jacob Busch. Carlisle set up the next goal just two minutes and thirty-nine seconds later as Bradley Latour got his 17th of the year. Belleville made a goalie change pulling Charlie Graham and replacing him with Michael Giugovaz, the Bulls responded with a goal of their own as David Tomasek brought the bulls within one at 7:51. The Generals extended their lead back to two as Michael Dal Colle scored his 37th goal on a pass from veteran Cole Cassels. The Bulls outshot the Generals 20-9 but Kenny Appleby kept the Gens in the lead making 19 saves on 20 shots.
The second period offered the Generals a chance to extend their lead early as they went to the power play just over one minute in the period. Oshawa could not convert on the man advantage and the two goalies kept the game at 3-1 before the home team got back on the board and pulled within one. The goal was scored by Scott Simmonds at 14:26 as he beat the Oshawa defenseman wide and put the puck past Appleby. The period ended with the Gens holding onto the 3-2 lead despite being outshot 32-20 through 40 minutes.
Scott Laughton got on the score sheet with a power play goal early in the third for his team leading 38th to put the Gens up 4-2, the game looked to be in the hands of the Generals with fifteen minutes remaining. The Bulls had other plans and responded just over two minutes later with their own PowerPlay goal scored by Tomasek, getting his second of the night. Belleville would tie the game 59 seconds later as Remi Elie put home his 27th of the year. At 13:42 into the period, the Bulls overtook the Generals as Niki Petti scored a PowerPlay marker. The Generals began pressing looking for the equalizer and it was second year player Michael Dal Colle with an individual effort, deking out two defenders and the goalie, to tie the game with his 38th goal of the year, with under two minutes left.
The game headed to Overtime and the short five-minute frame saw the Generals outshoot the Bulls 3-1, but offered no goals and a shootout was required. The first two shooters, Dylan Smoskowitz and Cameron Brace were both stopped. Scott Laughton was stopped by Michael Giugovaz on the Generals second attempt while David Tomasek scored for the Bulls, leaving a must score chance for Michael Dal Colle, who was stopped,ÃÂ giving the Bulls the 6-5 shootout victory.
Dal Colle was awarded with third star for his two goal, one assist game, he now has 38 goals and 54 assists for 92 points in his draft year. The Generals play again on Friday night as they travel to Kingston to take on the Frontenacs at 7:00 PM.
