Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - Mauro Gomez drilled an RBI-triple to right field in the eighth inning to put the Braves ahead for good in their 2-0 win over the Bulls on Thursday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The Braves win moves them within one game of the first place Bulls in the South Division, and tonight's shutout by the Braves was the first by an opponent at the DBAP this season.
Tyler Pastornicky singled to start the eighth inning and would come around to score on the triple to right field by Gomez. The Bulls then went to the bullpen brining in Adam Russell. Brandon Hicks, the first man Russell faced doubled to left field scoring Gomez and giving the Bulls a 2-0 lead.
The Bulls put runners on second and third with one-out in the seventh inning, but the Braves reliever Arodys Vizcaino worked out of the jam by fanning Nevin Ashley and JJ Furmaniak. The Bulls would load the bases in the eighth inning as well against Dustin Richardson. The Braves then went to the bullpen again bringing in Juan Abreu. Abreu struck out Russ Canzler, and got Daniel Mayora to ground out to short to end the threat.
Alex Torres started for the Bulls and went five and two-thirds innings allowing just three hits, walking three and striking out six. Joe Bateman (0-1) took the loss working two innings and allowing three hits and two runs.
Todd Redmond got the start for the Braves going six innings and allowing three hits and no runs striking out five. Vizcaino (1-0) picked up his first win of the season for the Braves and Jairo Asencio worked a perfect ninth inning striking out the side to earn his 19th save of the season.
Durham will finish their four-game series with Gwinnett on Friday July 29 at 7:05 p.m. at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The Bulls will send Andy Sonnanstine (1-1) to the mound against the Braves Yohan Flande (6-5). The game can be heard on 620 the Buzz, and tickets are available at www.durhambulls.com .
