Indianapolis Indians News Release
FORT MILL, S.C. -- Indianapolis starting pitcher Garrett Olson gave up just one earned run on only two hits in 5.1 innings, while the bullpen combination of Jared Hughes and Tim Wood blanked the Charlotte offense the rest of the way, to top the Knights 2-1 on Thursday night at Knights Stadium.
With the victory, Indianapolis improves to 55-52 on the season, while the loss drops Charlotte's record to 52-55. With the win, the Indians now trail Charlotte 2-1 in the series, while leading the season series 4-3 with the final meeting set for Friday night.
Pitchers from both sides were solid throughout the contest, with Olson (5.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO) earning the victory to improve to 4-0 after giving up the lone earned run on two hits in his 5.1 frames, while Charlotte LHP Doug Davis (6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO) was pinned with the loss despite allowing just two earned runs on six hits in six frames.
Both the Indians and Knights bullpens would not budge in support of their respective starters, as Hughes (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 SO) and Wood (1.2 IP, 1 H) altogether gave up three hits in 3.2 innings of relief, while relievers Brian Omogrosso (2.0 IP, 1 SO) and Josh Kinney (1.0 IP) combined to fire three perfect innings for Charlotte. Wood notched his team-leading 19th save of the year, while Hughes earned his fourth hold of the season.
Charlotte took the early lead in the second courtesy of a opposite field home run from CF Jordan Danks to left center. Danks' blast was his 12th of the year and gave the Knights a 1-0 advantage.
Indianapolis however, countered in the top of the third with a pair of scores to take the lead for good. SS Pedro Ciriaco began the rally with a single, advanced to third on 2B Josh Harrison's double, and then came across on a wild pitch to tie the contest. LF John Bowker followed with a infield single to bring home Harrison and give the Indians a 2-1 lead.
The Knights got their biggest chance to tie or take the lead in the sixth when they got their first two batters on base. SS Eduaro Escobar led off with a walk and stole second, before former Indians OF Lastings Milledge singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. Olson and Hughes however, combined to silence the threat by striking out the side from there.
Bowker (2-for-4, 1 RBI) was the only Indians player to collect two hits in the contest, while Milledge (2-for-3, 2 SB) also recorded a multi-hit effort for the Knights. 1B Matt Hague mashed a double in the sixth inning to set a new single-season career-high with his 31st double of the season.
Charlotte swiped a total of five bases during the contest, with Milledge leading the club with a pair of thefts.
C Ryan Doumit, who was with the Indians on a Major League Rehab Assignment, played the first seven innings and drew a walk in the third frame.
Indianapolis and Charlotte conclude their four-game series in their final meeting on the year on Friday evening at 7:15 p.m. RHP Dylan Axelrod is scheduled to get the ball for the Knights, while RHP Ross Ohlendorf is expected to start for the Tribe on a Major League Rehab Assignment.
The contest will be carried on WNDE 1260 AM, WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones, with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:55 p.m.

Post-game quotes --RHP Jared Hughes
(on entering the game with a one-run lead and runners on base) "I was really excited, I was pumped. I knew that the biggest thing was to keep the ball in the infield, so I attacked the bottom of the zone and was able to get ahead and put them away."
(on coming in from the bullpen in a close game) "There's always an adrenaline rush when you're coming out of that bullpen no matter what the score. The closer the score I guess there's a little bit more but I'm always really amped up. It's part of my game. "
(on working with C Ryan Doumit) "When he came out I said I'm sinkers and I'm sliders mostly and let's just go after these guys. After my warm-up pitches he had a pretty good feel for what I threw and he called a heck of a game."
