Bulls Hold Off Braves

RICHMOND, VA - The Durham Bulls beat the Richmond Braves 8-5 Monday at The Diamond. The Bulls opened up a 7-0 lead in the third inning and held on to cut Richmond's lead in the South Division to four and a half games.

The Bulls Brent Butler drilled a solo home run in the first to put Durham in front. The Bulls added a run in the second when Jeremy Owens came home on the Braves second error of the inning. Durham sent 11 men to the plate in the third inning to blow the game open; eight straight Bulls reached base after there were two outs. Jason Pridie, Jeremy Ownes, and Michel Hernandez singled runs home. Butler doubled two home to complete a five run rally. Richmond chipped back in the home half. Gregor Blanco tripled a run home and scored on a Martin Prado single. The Braves cut the Bulls lead to 7-4 in the sixth on an RBI double by Prado and a run-scoring single by Graham Koonce. The Braves moved to within two in the eighth when Brayan Pena knocked in a run with a ground out. The Bulls tacked on an insurance run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Jorge Velandia.

Jae Kuk Ryu earned the win. Chad Orvella picked up a save. Lance Cormier took the loss. Prado had three hits for Richmond. Chris Richard had three of the Bulls 14 hits.

The Braves open an eight game road trip Tuesday at Louisville at 7:05 PM. Blaine Boyer is scheduled to pitch for the Braves against Tom Shearn. The Braves return to The Diamond July 4.
