LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. â Formerly its nemesis, the Suns' bullpen was its adversary in a 3-2 victory over the Orlando Rays on Thursday in front of 472 fans at Cracker Jack Stadium.
Suns starter Tommy Farmer gave up one run over seven innings and left with a 3-1 lead. Farmer (4-3) earned the victory, spreading five hits and walking one. The bullpen showed signs of faltering, but came through when absolutely necessary.
Reliever Will McCrotty opened the eighth and allowed a single to Amado German followed by an RBI double to Jace Brewer. Brewer tagged to third on a fly ball to right field by Matt Diaz, but was left stranded as McCrotty struck out the final two batters. Jason Frasor, promoted from Vero Beach on Monday, retired the Rays in order in the ninth to earn his first save as a Sun.
The Suns (25-27) scored early off Rays starter Jon Switzer. Gookie Dawkins' run-scoring single plated Tarrik Brock with two outs in the second inning. That tied the game 1-1 after Orlando's Pete LaForest knocked in German with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Reggie Abercrombie doubled in Brock in the fourth inning to give Jacksonville its first lead; and Brennan King scored on a poor throw to the plate by Rays third baseman Juan Salas, giving the Suns their winning margin. King had three hits â all singles â to lead all hitters.
Switzer (3-5) earned the loss despite allowing seven hits and two earned runs over eight innings. John Rocker, who cleared waivers after being designated for assignment Monday, was reassigned to Orlando and subsequently struck out the Suns in order in the ninth.
Right-hander Heath Totten (3-4, 4.73 ERA) is scheduled to face Rays righty Jim Magrane (4-2, 4.29) at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Cracker Jack Stadium.
