ORLANDO - The Orlando Rays (23-28) won their fourth game in a row, taking the second game of the series against the Jacksonville Suns (24-27), 7-4 at Cracker Jack Stadium Wednesday evening. The Rays posted eleven hits while committing only one error to extend their season-high win streak to four games.
Jose Veras (1-5) earned his first win of the season, scattering three runs on five hits over six innings. Even Rust earned his eight save of the season surrendering two hits and one run over one inning.
Amado German led the O-Rays attack with a 3-for-4, one RBI effort while Matt Diaz went 2-3 with a double and four RBI. Dan Grummitt added an RBI on a two-out double in the third inning.
The Rays started a four run inning when Frank Moore singled for Orlando. After an error by the shortstop, Chairon Isenia was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jace Brewer struck out and Amado German sacrifice flied to right field, scoring Moore from third. Diaz doubled in two runs before and intentional walk and a catcher's interference call loaded the bases again for the Rays. Moore closed the inning with a strike out leaving the bases loaded.
The Suns' John Hanerhan (5-2) pitched five and a third, giving up five runs on eight hits. Hanerhan struck out four and walked one against the 27 batters he faced in the game.
Orlando and the Suns will continue their four-game series tomorrow at 7:35 p.m., with RHP Tommy Farmer (3-3, 3.83) pitching for the Suns, while the Rays countered with LHP Jon Switzer (3-4, 4.96).
Rays Notes
- Tampa Bay made five roster moves prior to the game Wednesday: LHP John Rocker (0-0, 6.00) was designated for assignment, while RHPs Brian Stokes (2-5, 3.20) was placed on the disabled list (elbow). RHP Jim Magrane (4-2, 4.29) was optioned to Orlando from Class AAA Durham to replace Stokes in the lineup. Catcher Graig Merritt was optioned to Class A Bakersfield. Catcher Dan Massiatte was activated from the disabled list.
