Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Birmingham Barons pulled away early in the game and never looked back as they beat the Huntsville Stars 7-5 in front of 3,882 fans on Wednesday night at the Hoover Met.

Stars' starting pitcher Luis Martinez (4-3) came into the game as the number two pitcher in the Southern League with a 4-2 record and a miniscule 1.21 ERA. He had allowed just eight earned runs on the season spanning 59.1 innings in 10 starts. The Barons looked right past the stellar numbers and simply went to work. Birmingham torched the young prospect for seven earned runs over five innings, including six in the first two innings.

The scoring was highlighted by a first inning solo home run by Darron Ingram which gives him the team lead with six on the season. Ryan Hankins went 1-3 with a double and two RBI and Carlos Maldonado posted three hits and scored twice.

Brian West started for the Barons and gave up just three runs but couldn't make it out of the fifth to qualify for the win. Jim Bullard came on to get the final out of the fifth and then gave way to resent call up Mitch Wylie (1-0) who picked up the victory after throwing 2.2 innings and giving up two runs. Royce Ring threw an inning and a third and struck out two to pick up his 13th save of the season.

Tomorrow night, game three of the four-game series will feature the Barons' LHP Neal Cotts (6-2, 2.28) versus Huntsville's RHP Pedro Liriano (4-4, 2.82). Game time is 7:00 and all the action can be heard on 101.1 FM "The Source" with Curt Bloom on the play-by-play.
