AtL Lancaster Stormers

Bullpen Nails Down 5-3 Win

August 29, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Lancaster bats were loud in only one inning on Saturday evening. It proved to be enough.

Lancaster erupted for four runs in the top of the second and held off a Bridgeport charge in the middle innings for a 5-3 victory at Harbor Yard, the club's third straight win in the series.

With the win, the Barnstormers extended their lead in the Freedom Division race to 3 1/2 games over the York Revolution, which fell to Somerset, 6-4.

One out into the second, Brian Cavazos-Galvez drilled a double into the left field corner off Brandon Bixler (0-1). Lance Zawadzki singled to left advancing Cavazos-Galvez to third, and Derrick Pyles walked to load the bases. Kevin Rivers produced the first run with a single into right. Bixler fanned Charlie Cutler for the second out, but Zach Collier yanked a two-run double into the right field corner, stretching the lead to 3-0. Bixler was then charged with a balk, allowing Rivers to carry the fourth run home.

Nate Reed (6-7) checked Bridgeport through the first four innings, but a throwing error on a routine grounder by Bryan Sabatella opened the gates in the fifth. Ethan Chapman followed with a double chopped over Mike McDade's head and down the right field line. Wellington Dotel whacked a liner off Reed's leg that caromed into foul territory as Sabatella scored. A second run crossed the plate as Dotel and Chapman executed a double steal. Lancaster then caught a break. Dotel started for third, and Andres Rodriguez sent a line drive straight to Kevin Rivers in left. The runners could not get back, and the Barnstormers picked up a quick pair of outs.

Jobduan Morales greeted Reed with a single in the ninth and moved to second on a wild pitch. Jeudy Valdez lined out to first, and Reed was replaced by Kyle Simon. Matt Wessinger drove a Simon pitch deep to right center for an RBI double, slicing Lancaster's lead to one.

Simon fanned the next two batters to escape the inning. Scott Gracey gave up a two-out single in the seventh, and Scott Patterson worked a 1-2-3 eighth to hold the lead.

Jerry Owens' pinch hit single into right produced an insurance run in the top of the ninth, and Marcus Walden held Bridgeport to a two-out walk in the bottom of the frame for his ninth save.

The Barnstormers and Bridgeport wrap up the four-game series on Sunday at 5:35. Lancaster will send Chad Beck (3-2) to the hill against Cory Riordan (4-3). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 5:15.
