Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Sky Sox squeaked out a 5-4 victory tonight over the Portland Beavers, clinging to their one-run lead over the game's last four innings.

The bullpen was tremendous tonight, putting forth one of their best combined performances of the season - holding the Beavers scoreless through four innings allowing just two hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

Tonight's match was effectively decided at the end of the second inning - fairly early in contrast to the pace of Sky Sox games throughout the year, which have included plenty of late inning drama. After the Springs and Portland exchanged lone runs in the first and second, respectively, the Sky Sox scored the deciding runs in the bottom of the second.

Travis Metcalf kicked off the scoring with a double down the line to left, later advanced to third on a one-out Michael McKenry single. Though the rally's prospects appeared bleak after Alan Johnson flew to right with the inning's second out, Kazuo Matsui came to the Sky Sox' rescue, plating both runners with a line drive triple to right-center; 3-1. Supplying an RBI triple on the next at-bat, 4-1, Omar Quintanilla was driven in by a Jay Payton infield single to third, 5-1, before the inning finally ended.

The Sox in control, 5-1, Portland began chipping away at Johnson, plating a second run in the third before drawing within one on the strength of a two-run fifth; 5-4.

But that was as close as the Beavers would get.

Edgmer Escalona called upon in relief of Johnson for the sixth, the tall right-hander kicked off four scoreless innings by the Sox ‘pen - a fantastic performance that saw three relievers register holds while Matt Reynolds recorded the save with a scoreless ninth.

With the win, the Sky Sox improve to 36-43 while the Beavers fall to 31-48. The Sox have an off-day tomorrow before the Bees fly in for a three-game set. First pitch on Thursday is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
