Petit, Middleton Named Player, Pitcher Of The Week
June 29, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Oklahoma City shortstop Gregorio Petit and Sacramento hurler Kyle Middleton have been named the Pacific Coast League's Player and Pitcher of the Week for June 21-27, the league announced Tuesday.
Petit, a 25-year-old from Ocumare, Venezuela, provided one of the most impressive single-game performances in PCL history in New Orleans on June 22. Entering play that evening, Petit had three home runs all season, but in the span of the three hour, nine minute contest, he etched his name in the PCL record books with two grand slams - just the fourth player in league history to accomplish the feat.
The right-handed hitter finished the contest 3-for-5 with two homers and eight RBI, joining Pete Schneider (5/11/1923), Babe Pinelli (7/4/1929) and A.J. Pierzynski (8/10/2000) as the only PCL players with two slams in a game. For the week, Petit hit .400 (10-for-25) with three home runs, 11 runs batted in, five runs scored and a pair of doubles. Even more impressive, with the two grand slams Petit is now 6-for-9 with 16 RBI with the bases loaded during the 2010 season.
Middleton, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound right-hander, went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two starts for the River Cats, defeating Salt Lake on June 21 and Tacoma on June 26. Against the Bees, the Pensacola, Fla., native used just 86 pitches in eight shutout innings, allowing five hits with one walk and six strikeouts. He followed that up with six strong innings against the Rainiers, allowing two runs (both unearned) on six hits, again striking out six.
Just one year removed from pitching in independent ball for his hometown Pensacola Pelicans, the 30-year-old Middleton has been a revelation in the well-stocked Oakland farm system. After being signed in July of 2009, he went 5-2 with a 2.69 ERA in nine starts for Double-A Corpus Christi, and is 5-5 with a 2.45 ERA in 69 2/3 innings for Sacramento this year. Middleton has flourished during the month of June, posting a 3-0 record with a 0.00 ERA in 23 innings, striking out 20 batters while holding opposing hitters to a .154 batting average.
