Lancaster Stormers News Release
Even when they start a game, the Lancaster bullpen is effective.
Daniel Moskos and four of his bullpen mates combined to five-hit the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Monday evening as the Barnstormers grabbed their 11th consecutive series opener with a 3-1 victory over Southern Maryland at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
With the win, the Barnstormers maintained their 3 1/2 game lead over York in the Freedom Division race. Lancaster's magic number for clinching a playoff berth dropped to three. Lancaster has six games remaining on its schedule while York has seven to play.
Moskos worked the first four innings in a spot start on Monday, yielding three hits and striking out four. The former Pittsburgh Pirates' lefty faced only one spot of trouble. Jake Opitz led off the fourth with a single to left center, and, one out later, Reggie Abercrombie poked a double over Kevin Rivers' head in right. Moskos whiffed both Jovan Rosa and Bryant Nelson to escape the inning.
He was staked to a 2-0 lead in the second. Mike McDade squibbed a roller up the third base line against the shift, easily beating it out for a leadoff single. Lance Zawadzki moved McDade to second with a slow grounder to first, and Brian Cavazos-Galvez picked up the run with a single inside the first base bag. Cavazos-Galvez then stole second, went to third on a Rivers grounder, and scored when Luke Hughes dropped a pop fly into shallow right.
Tim Sexton (1-1) kept Lancaster from scoring again until Rivers led off the seventh with a homer lined to right center.
Meanwhile, Pete Andrelczyk (8-2) notched the win with two perfect innings. Mark Lamm was perfect in the seventh, and Scott Gracey survived a dropped pop up to pitch a scoreless eighth.
Marcus Walden, who had not pitched in a week, was summoned for the ninth. With one out, Zach Wilson lashed a single into right. Abercrombie forced him at second and took second on a wild pitch. Rosa drove a 3-2 pitch through the left side for an RBI single, but Walden got Nelson on a hopper back to the hill for his 13th save.
Lancaster will send right-hander Joe Gardner (8-6) to the hill on Tuesday against right-hander Shaun Garceau (4-5). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Zach Collier singled in the seventh to extend a hitting streak to eight...The Barnstormers' pitching staff did not surrender a walk on the night... Lancaster stole five bases, including two by Zawadzki...Andrelczyk tied Gardner and Nate Reed for the team lead in wins...The Barnstormers need one more win to clinch a .500 record on the season and two more for manager Butch Hobson to reach 1,800 wins in his career at the helm.
