SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters claimed a 5-2 win over the Camden Riversharks in front of 2,465 fans at the friendly confines of Constellation Field on a beautiful Monday evening. The win moves the Skeeters to 64-69 on the season.
Making his first start with the Skeeters, Brett Marshall turned in a strong performance in his debut. The right-hander allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts over 5.0 innings on the mound.
Sugar Land utilized Riversharks starting pitcher, Bill Murphy's wildness in the bottom of the second to put up a crooked number. Johan Limonta singled up the middle with one out and Renny Osuna lifted a base hit over the head of Paddy Matera at second to put a pair aboard with two outs. Amadeo Zazueta and Kelly Cross each worked back-to-back walks to score the first run before Jeff Dominguez cleared the bases with a three-run triple to straightaway center, giving the Skeeters a 4-0 lead.
Camden narrowed the gap with a run in the top of the fourth. Matera reached on a bloop single to shallow right-center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Carlos Guzman followed with a Texas League-single into left-center. After a strikeout, Marshall just missed getting out of the inning with a double play on a slow-roller to third, but the Skeeters were unable to turn two, allowing the run to score, moving the score to 4-1.
The Riversharks added another run in the top of the fifth on a pair of defensive miscues by the Skeeters. Mike Kerns reached on a dropped popup at shortstop and moved to second on an infield single from Zach MacPhee. Following a groundout back to the pitcher, Marshall and Cross got crossed up on signs, resulting in a passed ball allowing the run to score.
The Skeeters expanded on the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out rally. Zazueta singled up the middle to start the frame, but a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout appeared as if the Sugar Land shortstop would be stranded. Kevin Russo deposited a single to the left-center alley to score Zazueta and increase the lead to 5-2.
Cory VanAllen, Adrian Martin, Fernando Nieve and Dan Runzler combined to keep the Riversharks off the scoreboard over the final four innings of play with Runzler earning his second save of the season to close out the 5-2 win.
