Bullfrogs Top Mallards, 5-2, Jacobson Homers
June 11, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis.- Luke Crabb picked up his first win of the season and held the Madison Mallards hitless through six innings. The Bullfrogs also tallied eight hits, and scored five runs, as Paul Jacobson homered.
The Bullfrogs are now 2-2 against Madison on the season with all of the games played at the "Duck Pond."
For the second time this season, the Bullfrogs dueled LHP Grant Spranger (Southeastern C.C.). He threw five innings and allowed just two hits in his first outing against Green Bay, but this start was much different.
Spranger allowed two runs in the second after consecutive base hits by Caleb Ratzman (Illinois State) and an RBI single lined to right field from Jack Strunc (Washington State). With two outs, J.J. Gould (Jacksonville) mishandled a ground ball from Matt De La Rosa (Lenoir-Rhyne), and the Bullfrogs captured a 2-0 lead.
Spranger exited after just two innings on the mound, and he allowed four hits on three runs. Madison had five pitchers throw the remaining seven innings.
In the third, the Bullfrogs tacked on run number three after an error at third base scored Ryan Donovan (Hofstra). Up 3-0, Paul Jacobson (South Dakota State) blasted a solo home run to left field. It was one of his three hits on the night.
Meanwhile, Luke Crabb was throwing a no hitter after six innings in the books. After he stranded two runners on a hit-by-pitch and walk in the sixth, Crabb allowed a run in the seventh, leaving two on the pond and no outs for lefty, Ben Messenger (UW-Oshkosh).
In his best outing of the year, Messenger threw two scoreless innings of relief at a critical juncture of the game. In the seventh inning, he only allowed one of the inherited runners to score, and dialed up a perfect eighth inning.
As the Bullfrogs took a 4-2 lead to the final frame, Ryan Donovan (Hofstra) slugged a double to right field on a ball that took a hop over first base man's Scott Tyler's (Ball State) head all the way to the right field wall.
The extra run gave way for closer Jeremy Graf (Flagler). And that's usually not good for the opposition.
The rally-killer, Graf, tossed a scoreless inning in the ninth and notched his third save of the year in his seventh appearance (1st NWL).
Skip Handelsman's Bullfrogs have now won three of their last four games. They play against the Wisconsin Woodchucks tomorrow in Wausau at 6:35PM. Hard-throwing right-hander, Alex Martinez (De Anza), gets the nod on the slab for the final game of three on the mid-week road trip.
Single game tickets are on sale now. Visit www.greenbaybullfrogs.com to purchase tickets. The Bullfrogs' business hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
