Bullfrogs Rally Late, Lose in Ninth
August 3, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
After the Bullfrogs rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth, the La Crosse Loggers drove home two runs, both on bases loaded walks, to edge out a 5-4 win at Copeland Park on Friday.
The Loggers took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and didn't score again until the ninth inning. Back-to-back home runs from Matt Chapman and Bobby Juan off of Green Bay starter Zak Hermans gave La Crosse this lead.
The Bullfrogs rallied immediately in the top of the second inning to cut the Loggers lead to 3-2 when Ryan Matranga drove home Taylor Peterson and Jordan Debuer with a double.
Hermans was able to effectively limit his pitch count for the rest of the game. He made it through six complete innings, gave up only the three earned runs, and took a no decision.
The Bullfrogs tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning with an RBI single from Debuer, the newest Bullfrog.
After two scoreless innings of relief from Robb Woodcock, the Bullfrogs rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth inning. Pinch hitter Alex Abrams led off the frame with a base hit up the middle. He stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. Billy Moon, another pinch hitter, then drove home Abrams with a two-out single through the right side to give Green Bay the late lead.
As soon as Abrams scored the run, he headed straight to the bullpen to warm up and entered in the bottom of ninth with a chance to earn the save. In his first blown save of the year, Abrams through 19 balls and 9 strikes. He walked four batters, including bases loaded walks to Tyler Kuresa and Brandon Bednar to tie and win the game for La Crosse.
It is the second time Green Bay has been walked-off on this year, and the Bullfrogs are now 4-13 in games decided by one run.
The Bullfrogs remain in La Crosse for the rubber match of the series Saturday at Copeland Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM. To watch or listen to the game live, head to www.greenbaybullfrogs.com.
