Stadler throws five perfect innings, Chucks win 5-1

Mequon - Austin Stadler and Brett Higginbotham combined to retire the first 19 batters they faced Friday against the Lakeshore Chinooks as the "˜Chucks blanked the Chinooks 5-1.The Woodchucks would strike first for the second consecutive evening as they got on the scoreboard in the second inning. After Brendon Hayden doubled to lead off the inning, he would later score on a fielder's choice hit into by Nate Irving, making it 1-0. Irving would score later in the frame on a two-out double by Bryant Munoz, Munoz's first extra base hit and first RBI as a Woodchuck to put the "˜Chucks on top 2-0. Austin Stadler got the start for the Woodchucks, and was phenomenal for a third consecutive outing. Stadler retired all 15 batters he faced with one strikeout before being removed as he is still working up the strength in his elbow after Tommy John surgery last May. In three starts, Stadler has allowed no earned runs through 12 innings with only three hits and three walks allowed with thirteen strikeouts.

The Woodchucks would add onto their lead in the seventh, aided by three Chinooks errors. After Joey Luvisi singled to start off the inning, catcher's interference was called on Connor Lynch with Munoz at the plate, putting Luvisi on second and Munoz on first. After a double steal and a fly out by Mike Bernal, Brooks Braga singled to right, scoring Luvisi, and making it a 3-0 game. After Braga stole second, Eric Filia-Snyder was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out for Hayden. Hayden hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Munoz, and the relay throw to first was dropped by Ryan Krill, allowing Braga to score, and putting the Woodchucks on top 5-0.

The Woodchucks pitching staff would combine to retire the first 19 Chinook batters before the Chinooks broke up the perfect game in the seventh. After Brett Higginbotham pitched a 1-2-3 sixth and retired the first batter in the seventh, Forrest Chadwick tripled to right-center and later scored on a groundout by Brian Anderson to make it 5-1.

That would be all the Chinooks would get as Higginbotham and Pascal Paul combined to shut down the offense the rest of the way as the Woodchucks coasted to a 5-1 victory. Stadler got the win for the "˜Chucks improving to 2-0 on the season. Woodchuck starters have combined to go 2-0 with a 0.98 ERA in the last three ballgames.

The series will head to Wausau on Saturday for the final of a three-game set as the "˜Chucks send Wausau-native Adam Kramer to the mound for the start.
