Bullfrogs Lose One Late to the Express
June 16, 2016 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis. - The Bullfrogs had a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning but a home run by Dalton Varsho (Milwaukee) and miscues in the bottom of eighth cost this ballgame for the Bullfrogs. The final score was 6-2 in favor of the Express. The Bullfrogs record now sits at 6-11.
The Bullfrogs started the scoring in the top of the second. Jonah Davis (UC-Berkeley) led off the inning with a solo home run over the left field fence to plate the first runs of the game for the Bullfrogs. They would score the second run off a fielder's choice by Parker Coss (UC-Irvine) to score Randell Kanemaru (Columbia).
Stuart Springer pitched well for the Bullfrogs as he went five plus innings, giving up one run on eight hits. That run came across on a sac fly by Tyler Jones (Air Force) to score the Ben Mezzenga (Minnesota), who led the inning off with a walk.
It was the seventh and eighth innings for the Bullfrogs that cost them this ballgame. Clinging to a one run lead, BJ Sabol came on to pitch for the Bullfrogs. He got the first two outs of the inning before giving up a single to Sam Hurt (Kent State). With a runner on first and two outs, Varsho sent a slider deep to right center field for a two run home run that gave the Express their first lead of the game.
Logan Elliot (Mississippi State) came on to pitch the eighth, trying to keep the Bullfrogs within a run. The right hander struggled as he walked the first two batters of the inning. The third batter Zach Ashford (Fresno State) bunted a ball back to Elliot but Elliot threw the ball away trying to get the out at third base. One run came around to score. Matt Ellenbest (Morehead State) replaced Elliot after a walk to Jared Mang (New Mexico). Ellenbest gave up a two run single to Cody Bohanek (UIC) to push the lead to four runs. Ellenbest was able to get out of the inning without anymore runs coming across.
Coss picked up his first hit in a bullfrogs uniform tonight, as he hit an infield single that hit off the pitchers glove, and his first RBI. Colton Onstott (Dodge City CC) and Matt Hoeg (Iowa Western CC) both had one hit on the night.
Bullfrogs are back in action tomorrow night as they finish this two game series against the Express. First pitch is slated for 7:05pm.
