Buffalo Acquires Schmitz In Dispersal Draft

(BUFFALO, NY) â The Buffalo Destroyers acquired K Brian Schmitz from the Carolina Cobras in exchange for the seventh pick in today's Arena Football League Dispersal Draft. The league held the Dispersal Draft enabling every team to select a player from the Toronto Phantoms roster. Toronto suspended operations for the 2003 season.
Schmitz appeared in 13 games for the Cobras last season scoring 96 points, ninth in the league among kickers. He connected on 51 of 61 PAT's (84%) and hit 15 of 35 field goals (44%). He set a Cobras post-season record and tied and AFL post-season record with four field goals at Indiana on July 29, 2001. He played two seasons with Carolina seeing action in 20 games and scoring 149 points.
"Brian played his first Arena Football game against us two years ago and he has impressed us from the start," said Destroyers Director of Player Personnel Rudy Klawiter. "We had an opportunity to bring Brian in for our dispersal pick that we really didn't intend to use anyway.
Schmitz played four seasons for the University of North Carolina from 1996-99 as a place kicker and punter. He was the Tar Heels team MVP, first team All-ACC and first team All-American his senior season. He set an Atlantic Coast Conference career record with a 44.4 yards per punt average in four seasons. He kicked the game winning field goal in the Illinois 5A state championship game for Maine South (Ill.) High School his senior season and was named second team All-USA Today.
"It's great to bring in another quality kicker into training camp," added Klawiter. "The competition between Brian and Steve (McLaughlin) will be good.
