Rampage Add Two, Lose Three in Expansion Draft

Grand Rapids Rampage News Release

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Rampage of the Arena Football League were expecting to lose a few players in today's Expansion Draft, which was held for the John Elway's Colorado Crush. What they weren't expecting was to gain the talents of former Western Michigan Bronco Sean Riley and former Dallas Desperado Lamar Grant.

After losing defensive specialist Brandon Davis to the Crush at pick number eight, the Rampage traded lineman Bryant Shaw to Colorado for the eleventh and twelfth picks of the draft.

It took a matter of seconds for Rampage head coach Michael Trigg to select Riley, who was left unprotected by the San Jose SaberCats. Riley was selected by the SaberCats in the 2001 Dispersal Draft, but never played a down for the ArenaBowl XVI champions. He was placed on San Jose's exempt list after signing with the New York Giants. The speedy two-way threat recently attended Giants' training camp, but was released during the preseason. Prior to joining the Giants and SaberCats, the 5-9, 170-pound wide receiver/defensive back was a three-year starter with the Milwaukee Mustangs, ranking among the team's all-time receiving leaders.

The Rampage used their second pick to select Grant, a 5-10, 185-pound defensive specialist. In his only season in Dallas, the former Duke Blue Devil led the expansion Desperados in tackles (53.5) and finished second in passes defended (11). Grant spent the 2001 season with the Indiana Firebirds, totaling 35 tackles, six defended passes and two interceptions.

With the very next selection (13th overall), the Detroit Fury ended the Rampage's expansion draft experience by selecting defensive specialist Joseph Todd. The Fury acquired the pick by trading defensive specialist Kenny Wheaton to the Crush.

The Rampage kick off their home schedule with a 3 p.m. NBC affair against the New York Dragons on Sunday, Feb. 16. Full season and mini-plan ticket packages are currently available by calling the Rampage office at 1-888-595-4878.
