San Jose SaberCats News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. (October 22, 2002) – The World Champion San Jose SaberCats lost two players who didn't play a down during the 2002 season and added one to the roster as the Arena Football League conducted its Expansion and Dispersal Drafts on Tuesday.

FB/LB Joey Dozier and WR/DB Sean Riley, who both spent the entire 2002 AFL season on San Jose's exempt list after signing with NFL teams, were selected off the SaberCats' roster in the Expansion Draft, which was conducted to help stockpile the roster for the Colorado Crush.

Dozier, the SaberCats leading rusher in 2000 and 2001, was selected by Colorado with the sixth pick in the draft. The 25-year-old was signed by Green Bay in February and allocated to NFL Europe where he played the 2002 season with the Frankfurt Galaxy.

The Grand Rapids Rampage selected Riley with the 11th pick in the draft in a selection acquired from Colorado in an earlier trade. Riley signed with the NFL's New York Giants after being selected by San Jose from the Milwaukee Mustangs in the 2001 Dispersal Draft.

Fourteen players were selected in the Dispersal Draft from the roster of the Toronto Phantoms, who will not be competing in the 2003 season. With the 13th pick the SaberCats selected WR/LB Nakia Jenkins.

Jenkins (6-2, 215, Utah State) played just three games in 2002 catching 9 balls for 104 yards and a TD while making 1.5 tackles on defense. The former All-Big West Conference selection was a teammate of SaberCats' quarterback Mark Grieb in 2001 with the XFL's Las Vegas Outlaws.

Complete draft results can be viewed on the AFL's official website www.arenafootball.com.

The 2003 season marks the historical debut of the AFL on NBC. The network will broadcast up to four AFL games on a regional basis each regular-season Sunday (except March 30) plus all playoff games for a possible total of 70 contests.

The SaberCats begin defense of their World Championship in February. Season tickets for all eight regular season games played in HP Pavilion at San Jose are on sale and can be purchased by calling a ticket representative at (408) 573-5577.
