Colorado Crush Stocks Its Roster
October 22, 2002 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
NEW YORK â Offensive specialist JOE DOUGLASS (5-11, 185, Montana) became the first player in Colorado Crush history when the team made him the first selection in the AFL Expansion Draft. The Crush, who begin their first season in February, selected 15 players from the 90 made available from the rosters of the league's 15 remaining teams.
Douglass, who played in only two games in 2002 due to injury, led the Rush in receptions (99), receiving yards (1,287), touchdowns (26), kick return yardage (990) and scoring (194) during the 2001 season. The former Montana Grizzly enters his fourth season and second on an expansion team.
Team rosters effected the most by the draft include the Dallas Desperados, who lost four players, while the Chicago Rush, Detroit Fury, New York Dragons, Grand Rapids Rampage and the defending ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats, each lost two players. The Crush selected former Desperados OL/DL AARON HAMILTON (6-5, 280, Tarleton), WR/DB ADRIAN LUNSFORD (5-10, 185, Iowa Wesleyan), LAMAR GRANT (6-0, 190, Duke) and OL/DL CHRIS BRYMER (6-3, 300, USC). This marks the fourth time that Lunsford has been selected in an AFL Expansion Draft.
The Crush also selected former All-Arena lineman ROBERT STEWART (6-0, 298, Alabama), while the New Jersey Gladiators traded OL/DL CHRIS JANEK (6-4, 295, Wisconsin) to Colorado for the right to select the League's record-holder for single-season tackles, CORNELIUS COE (6-0, 198, Northern Michigan). Coe had 121.5 tackles during his rookie season in 2001.
