John Elway's Colorado Crush Draft Avenger Lineman Dan Greer

October 22, 2002 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Los Angeles Avengers News Release

LOS ANGELES -- While much of the Arena Football League was a buzz with the activity surrounding a pair of drafts, Tuesday was largely a quiet day for the Los Angeles Avengers.

The only transaction involving the Avengers saw offensive-defensive lineman Dan Greer get selected by the Colorado Crush with the seventh pick of the 2003 Expansion Draft.

Greer (6-foot-1, 275 pounds) played for the Avengers in 2000 and 2002. He spent the 2001 season as a defensive lineman with the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe. Greer played in three games for the Avengers in 2000, making five tackles and one sack for a loss of five yards. This past season, he saw action in eight games, assisted on two tackles and had one stop behind the line of scrimmage.

The Crush, an expansion team owned by former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway, were allowed to choose players off the rosters of any current team who were designated as "unprotected." Each AFL club protected 16 players whose rights they control. All others (not including free agents or exempt players) were deemed "unprotected" and hence eligible to be selected by Colorado.

The Crush selected offensive specialist Joe Douglass from the Chicago Rush with their first pick. Colorado went on to select 14 more players in the draft, including former USC offensive lineman Chris Brymer (6-3, 300), and traded four picks for three other players.

Following the Expansion Draft, the AFL immediately held the 2003 Dispersal Draft, which distributed available players off the roster of the defunct Toronto Phantoms.

The Avengers, who owned the 12th pick, opted to pass and not make any selections.

"We lost Dan Greer, which was unfortunate, but that sort of thing happens when the league expands," Avenger head coach Ed Hodgkiss said. "In the Dispersal Draft, we got a low pick since we had a fairly good season and that meant all the guys we would have wanted were already taken. So we passed. We'll be making other news soon. We're high on some guys we've been working out lately and are going to sign a few players that haven't been in this league just yet. We're going to go that route to compliment our roster right now."

Avenger season tickets for the 2003 campaign, which begins in February, are now on sale and can be purchased by calling 1-888-AVENGERS or online at www.laavengers.com.
