Bucs Select 21 Players in Main USHL Draft

May 6, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Des Moines Buccaneers News Release

(Urbandale, IA) The Des Moines Buccaneers concluded the two-day United States Hockey League draft by making 21 selections during Phase II on Tuesday. Scoring was focal point and the Buccaneers made that clear in the opening minutes of the draft. For the first time since 201, the Buccaneers had a first round selection and took advantage of the previously missed opportunity by taking Dan DelPaggio of the Thunder Bay Stars.

DelPaggio was one of the top scorers in the Superior Junior Hockey League this past season with 107 points (36 goals, 41 assists) in 59 games. The Thunder Bay, ONT native has grown up playing youth and midget hockey in a town that has produced dozens of National Hockey League stars over the years.

The Bucs then followed that that selection by trading their second round pick to Green Bay for veteran forward Ryan Siroky who brings a proven scoring touch. In two seasons with the Gamblers, Siroky has played 121 games with 36 points (25 goals, 11 assists) and is committed to Miami (OH) starting with the 2015-2016 season.

The 21 players selected on Tuesday will join the eight taken during Phase I on Monday plus eligible returning players and free agents at the team's annual tryout camp June 12-15 at Buccaneer Arena. From there, the team will whittle down invitees to training camp in September with a final roster announced in the team's preceding opening night.

The Bucs, and all USHL teams, made enough selections so as to bring their total protected list to 45 players.
