Wausau Woodchucks News Release
WATERLOO, IOWA - The Waterloo Bucks rallied late to defeat the Wisconsin Woodchucks, 6-4, in the first game of a three-game set Wednesday afternoon.
Mike Gerber showed off his power once again for the Woodchucks as he hit a two-run home run in the first inning, his fourth of the season, that also scored Kyle DeMerritt.
The Bucks came right back in the bottom of the inning and scored a run after a Jeremy Lucas groundout brought in Davis Hendrickson who tripled to lead off the game.
Jeff Popick started off the next inning with a base hit for the Bucks and came around to score on a single by Drew Walsh. Walsh then proceeded to score on a triple by the following batter, Andrew Ewing, to give the Bucks a 3-2 lead.
The score stayed that way until the fifth when the Woodchucks struck back to tie the game. Kyle DeMerritt got on base with his second double of the game in the fifth and then stole home off of pitcher Mike Wisecarver to make it a 3-3 game.
Carlos Escobar, Jr., lead the eighth inning off with a double, and came around to score on an RBI-double by Austin Coleman to give the ¬ËChucks a 4-3 lead.
However, the Bucks came right back in the bottom of the eighth with a few runs of their own. Cameron Perkins lead off the inning with a single and was followed two batters later by a single by Jeff Popick. Sean Borman hit a ball into right field that was mishandled by Tyler Heineman that allowed Perkins and Popick to score, and Adams also scored on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Adams to make the score 6-4.
Woodchuck starter Richard Klein picked up the loss in the game, but pitched very well in eight innings of work. He allowed 11 hits and four earned runs, but threw much better than his line would indicate.
The game ended at that score, snapping a five-game losing streak for the Bucks, dropping the ¬ËChucks to 11-15 on the season. The two teams will play again tomorrow and Friday in Waterloo at 6:35.
