First-Half Race Tightens as Bullfrogs Hop into Town

June 29, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods) - Madison Mallards News Release

MADISON, WI - June 29, 2011. The Madison Mallards host Green Bay at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday night at the "Duck Pond," starting a three-game set with the third-place Bullfrogs.

The Mallards enter the game tied for first place in the South Division and sit only a few percentage points behind Eau Claire for the out-right lead after the team split a double-header with the Wisconsin Woodchucks Tuesday. Green Bay sits at 15-10 and is only one game behind Madison in the standings.

Leading the Mallards into the game is Jordan Owen (Tennessee - Martin). Owen is perhaps the hottest hitter in the entire Northwoods League, as his .400 batting average is tops amongst all qualifying hitters. He has appeared in 23 games for the Mallards, and has at least one hit in 20 of those games. Owen saw his 13-game hitting streak end after going 0-for-3 in game two of Tuesday's double-dip. He is also third in the league in runs scored with 20.

Other leaders for the Mallards' offense include Niko Fraser (Elon), who is hitting .500 over the last seven days, and Willie Argo (Illinois), who is batting .313 over the same span.

On the mound for the Ducks will be Ryan Bores (Cuyahoga Community College). Bores is 1-1 on the season with a 2.57 ERA in 21 innings pitched. His lone loss came against Green Bay the last time the two teams saw each other back on June 17 as the Bullfrogs roughed him up for eight runs (four earned) in the Mallards' 15-3 loss at the "Duck Pond."

Serving as catalysts for the Bullfrogs' offense this season are Duncan McAlpine (Dallas Baptist), Jacob May (Coastal Carolina), Mitch Haniger (Cal Poly), and Billy Moon (Gonzaga). All four players are hitting over .300 on the season. Matt Ozanne (Santa Clara) has also been a thorn in the Mallards' side, as he has gone 6-for-11 and has driven in three of his four RBI against the team.

Pitching for Green Bay will be Zak Hermans (Princeton). Hermans is 1-2 on the season, but his lone win came at the expense of the Mallards. In the 15-3 win, Hermans went six innings, allowed no runs on one hits, had no walks, and struck out eight. He faced two over the minimum. In all, Hermans has pitched 11.1 innings and has an ERA of 3.97 in his three starts.

This is the second time this season that Bores and Hermans will be paired together as starting pitchers at the "Duck Pond."

The Mallards have eight games remaining in the first half of the season, all coming against the top three teams in the South Division.

Wednesday is Ho-Chunk Gaming Madison Cash Craze Night, where the first 1,000 fans (21+) will receive an envelope containing anywhere from $1 to $100. Also, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be holding a food drive, and fans will have the chance to meet WWE Hall of Fame legend "The Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase.
