Thunder Bay Border Cats News Release

The Waterloo Bucks waited out a two-hour rain delay and then rained down on the Border Cats with a seven-run 1st inning en route to a 14-5 win over the home side Friday night at soggy Subway Field. The Bucks sent 13 men to the plate in their first at-bat, which started with a lead-off home run by second baseman Pat MacKenzie. Waterloo improved its first place record in the North Division to 20-9, while Thunder Bay dropped to 11-19.

Ryan Atwood (Florida Gulf Coast University) took the loss to fall to 0-2. The lefthander recorded just two outs as he gave up seven runs on three hits and five walks. Three position players, Brad Burcroff (Northeastern University), Joey Hawkins and Dylan Becker both of Missouri State University combined to pitch five innings in relief during the loss.

Cory Kay (Harper College) raised his average to .330 as he went 3-5 with a pair of runs batted in. Hawkins went 2-4 with a run scored and Philip Lyons (Nicholls State University) had a 2-5 night at the plate and scored once.

The Cats continue their five-game homestand Saturday as they take on the last place Alexandria Blue Anchors in the opener of the three-game series. Jordan Church (Sam Houston State University) is the scheduled starter for Thunder Bay. The 6'7" righthander has appeared in four games and is 0-2 with a 7.59 ERA. There's fireworks following the game tonight with the first pitch set for 7:35pm.
