Blue Anchors Fall to Honkers 17-2

Alexandria, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors fell to the Rochester Honkers Friday night by a score of 17-2 at Knute Nelson Memorial Park. The loss puts the Blue Anchors at 7-22 on the season.

Rochester was first on the board in the top of the second against Blue Anchor starter Hunter Newman. Reid Roper drew a walk and moved to third on a Kevin Barker. An error by Kris Goodman off the bat of Jeff Campbell brought home Roper and Rochester had a 1-0 lead. Jarad Deacon collected an RBI base hit bringing home Barker and moving Campbell to third. A sacrifice fly by Tucker Tharp scored Campbell giving the Honkers a 3-0 lead. With two outs, Kalei Hanawahine singled and stole second. A triple by Carter Burgess plated Hanawahine and they had a 4-0 advantage after two innings of play.

Alex Greer singled to start the third inning and Roper followed with a walk. Zac Custer entered in relief and a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position. A strikeout by Barker was the first out of the inning but Campbell singled home Greer and the Honkers lead grew to 5-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, one big blast gave Rochester a commanding lead. Custer allowed three base hits to start the frame and walked Tyler Baker to force in one run. Taylor Simpson entered in relief and his first pitch to Alex Greer was hit over the centerfield fence for a grand slam, putting the Honkers up 10-0.

The Blue Anchors got one back in the bottom of the sixth. Goodman tripled to start the third and came home when Andrew Sohn reached on an error by the shortstop, making the score 10-1.

Scott Sanderson came in to pitch the seventh and walked his first batter Barker. A strikeout later, Deacon singled and the bases became loaded after a walk to Tharp. Hanawahine grounded into a fielder's choice scoring Barker. Michael Pomeroy pinch hit and singled to score Deacon and increase the Honkers lead to 12-1.

The Honkers continued to score in the top of the eighth against the new reliever Ross Slaney. A base hit and two walks loaded the bases with no outs for Rochester. Deacon singled to score Greer and a sacrifice fly by Tharp scored Roper making the score 14-2. Hanawahine collected his third hit of the game to score Barker and the Honkers led 15-2.

Alexandria got one in the bottom of the eighth against Stephen Paladino. TIm Cusick singled and Ryan Blanchard followed with a walk. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position and Aaron Gretz grounded out to second bringing home Cusick to cut the Honkers' lead to 15-3.

Ty Walker, who entered for the last out in the eighth, gave up a ground-rule double to Tyler Baker to start the ninth. On a 3-1 pitch, Greer lifted another ball out of the park, his second homer of the game, and Rochester led 17-3.

Taking the loss was Hunter Newman (0-2). He pitched two innings giving up five runs, three earned, on five hits and three walks while striking out two. Custer threw one inning allowing four hits and four runs, walking one and collecting one strikeout. In three innings, Simpson gave up one run on one hit and two walks. Giving up two runs was Sanderson on two hits and two walks with one strikeout. Slaney allowed three runs on three hits and two walks and a strikeout in 2/3 of an inning. Walker gave up two runs in 1.1 innings on three hits.

Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Kris Goodman (3B) - The Iowa Hawkeye had three hits and a walk in five trips to the plate, scoring once. His average is now .311 on the year.

Notes: Goodman tied a season high with three hits...Goodman also leads the team now with 20 runs scored...Salem, Sohn and Blanchard all saw their hit streaks come to an end...The Blue Anchors still lead the Northwoods League in team batting average at a .287 clip...Alexandria travels to Thunder Bay for a three-game series against the Border Cats...On the mound is Mickie Keuning (0-1, 12.37)...The game can be seen live, starting at 7:35 p.m., at www.youtube.com/user/NorthwoodsLeague.
