Des Moines Buccaneers News Release

The Des Moines Buccaneers this weekend resembled a caged animal; at their most dangerous when you put them in a corner. That was the situation they found themselves in late in Ralston Arena with their backs against the wall and they found a way to score twice in less than two minutes and win by a final of 2-1.

It took a power play for Omaha to score the first goal of the game as Matt Meier cashed in on the man advantage. Jan Ruzicka made a great save going from right to left but couldn't locate the rebound which went right back to the stick of Meier who buried it. Brian Williams and Brannon McMannus were given the assists and the Omaha side outshot the Buccaneers 11-5 in the first period thanks to two power play opportunities to Des Moines' zero.

The second period was the opposite script with Des Moines having the shots on goal lead and Omaha being whistled for three straight penalties. The difference was Des Moines was unable to score in the middle frame despite outshooting their hosts 10 to 3.

Des Moines kept putting on pressure in the third period and it paid off when Alec Rauhauser was tripped by McMannus with just over four minutes left in regulation. On the MidAmerican Energy Power Play James Gobetz was fed at the left circle from Alec Rauhauser and unleashed a bomb that beat Omaha goaltender Zack Skog, who had been perfect in the first 25 shots on goal. He would not be able to stop either Gobetz or Zach Jordan at 19:15 when Jordan shielded off one man and on a partial break slid a puck through the crease and deposited it into the back of the net for a 2-1 lead.

The Buccaneers only led for 45 seconds but lead when the final horn sounded. The goal scorers Jordan and Gobetz were named the first and second stars respectively with the goaltender Ruzicka picking up the third star.

Next up for the Bucs is a road game in Waterloo on Friday, November 20th.
