Omaha Lancers News Release
Ralston, NE - Matt Meier scored his third goal of the year in the first period, however, the Des Moines Buccaneers stormed back with two goals late in regulation to take a 2-1 victory over the Omaha Lancers in front of a sellout crowd of over 3,500 in Ralston Arena on Saturday night.
The Lancers' power play came through for the first goal of the game. After the puck went to the front of the net, Matt Meier let a shot go that was denied by Buccaneers' goalie Jan Ruzicka. After the save, the puck rolled and sat at the top of the crease. Meier collected his own rebound and lifted it over Ruzicka for the 1-0 lead on his third of the year. The power play tally came at 13:28 of the first period with assists from Brian Williams and Brannon McManus.
After no scoring in the second period, Omaha held their 1-0 advantage going into the final frame. Brannon McManus took a tripping minor penalty late in regulation and Des Moines took advantage of the man advantage to even the score. James Gobetz let a one-timer go from the top of the left wing circle for his first of the year to tie the game 1-1 with only 2:30 left in the game. Assists on the goal were credited to Alec Rauhauser and Ty Pelton-Byce.
Just when it seemed like the two sides were again going to overtime, Des Moines converted to take a late lead. After the Lancers lost the puck at their offensive blue line, Zach Jordan raced down the ice for the Buccaneers. Jordan slid the puck under goaltender Zackarias Skog for his eighth of the year to give Des Moines a 2-1 lead with only 45-seconds left in the game. The goal was unassisted and held up as the game-winning goal.
The Omaha Lancers are back home Friday night as they host the Team USA-U18's at Ralston Arena! It's "Mommy & Minions Night" at 7:05pm. Come meet the Minions at the game! Can't make it?
