Buccaneers Use Late-Period Scoring to Top Lincoln
October 28, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Des Moines Buccaneers News Release
There's a hockey saying that you should never give up a goal in the last minute of a period. Luckily, nobody told the Lincoln Stars as the Des Moines Buccaneers victimized the top USHL team Lincoln four times in the final minute of a period and came up with a 6-2 victory on the road.
As has been the case every time these two teams have met, Lincoln got on the board first when Grant Jozefek scored for Lincoln 14:23 into the first period. However a MidAmerican Energy Power Play goal by Alec Rauhauser, his first of the game, as he crept down into the slot tied the game at 19:46 of the period.
The Stars again gained the lead when Jozefek picked up his second of the game, redirecting a shot from the point from Liam Schioler to take a 2-1 lead. That lead was erased by Kenny Hausinger at 10:07 of the second, and it was the last time the home team would lead in the evening. Nikita Pavlychev scored on a delayed call at 19:13 of the period and then Kenny Hausinger scored another MidAmerican Energy Power Play goal at 19:52 to stun the crowd at the Ice Box and skate off the ice with a 4-2 lead.
The Buccaneers withstood some pushback from their Western Conference foe but Jan Ruzicka came up with 10 saves in the final period, 23 in the contest, to help preserve the win. The Buccaneers iced the game with a Zach Jordan goal at 14:29 of the third period and Georgy Gorodetsky had an empty-netter at 19:59.
The Buccaneers improved their record to 4-5-1 and tied themselves in points with the Tri-City Storm for 5th place in the Western Conference. Up next for Des Moines is a home matchup with Dubuque on Friday, October 30th.
