Buccaneers Jersey Auction to Benefit Leukemia/Lymphoma Society

February 3, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Des Moines Buccaneers News Release

Urbandale (IA) The Des Moines Buccaneers are proud to once again partner with the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society as the team will hold a special post-game jersey auction following Saturday's home game. All of the proceeds from the auction will go towards the fight against blood cancers with the goal of equaling the $15,000 that was raised last season.

Immediately after the Buccaneers' 7pm game against Fargo, fans are invited to stay and participate in a live auction format as players will come back out of the locker room. Leukemia/Lymphoma Society personnel will be on hand to collect donations and provide receipts for tax information while winning bidders will also get their photo taken with the player whose jersey they get to take home.

"We are thrilled to provide a venue and opportunity to help raise necessary funds for the fight against blood cancers" says Scott Montesano the Buccaneers Director of Communications. "The jerseys look fantastic, and with the money going to a worthwhile cause, fans shouldn't have second thoughts about getting one."

With the Olympics starting at the end of the week, and with the Buccaneers' team colors already a patriotic red, white and blue, the jerseys follow that theme. The predominately white jerseys feature the Buccaneers' logo on the front with an American flag pattern near the hip.

"They are the type of jerseys that a fan could wear to any game and not feel out of place" notes Montesano. "They are special, one-time jerseys, but they aren't over-the-top."

The night is made possible by Krueger BP which is locally operated by the Krueger family, a name familiar with Buccaneer fans over the years. Four Krueger's (Brad, Brian, Mark, Nick) have played for the Buccaneers over the years and the family has taken an active role in raising funds for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society over the years. Prior to the auction, the family held dance-a-thons at the arena and is constantly active in various fundraisers.

Trading Deadline Approaches

Cell phone batteries will be tested this week around the United States Hockey League as the trading deadline hits at 11:59pm on Thursday. Teams jockeying for postseason position as well as those out of the picture are looking for that extra piece that will assist them either now or in the future. Each USHL team is allowed eight transactions for the season, not including movement to and from the affiliate list.

Buccaneers' head coach Jon Rogger doesn't guarantee any moves will be made but isn't ignoring potential deals either.

"We are on the phones this week and have a few areas of interest but any deal we make needs to benefit the present and the future and not compromise either" says Rogger. "We need to make sure the value is right, especially on our young players, and understand better deals may develop in the off-season."

Protected lists are frozen after February 10th and continue that way until the end of the season.

Affiliated with Success

The Des Moines Buccaneers' affiliate list includes 16 players, with two players born in 1995, five born in 1996 and nine born in 1997. One of the players saw significant time with the Buccaneers already this season while fans have gotten a taste of a few of the others at times.
