Portland Sea Dogs News Release

(Portland, ME) - Sea Dogs LF Bubba Bell led off the bottom of the first with his 8th home run to spark the 'Dogs past Binghamton (24-26), 6-2, in the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday night at Hadlock Field. Bell finished the game 2-4, adding a triple and 3 RBI. His homer sparked a 3-run first inning to give Portland (31-19) a lead they would hold onto for the rest of the game.

Bell's big night made a winner out of Dustin Richardson. The lefty threw allowed two earned runs on four hits in 5.1 innings. He walked four and struck out seven. The win is Richardson's first since he won at Binghamton, allowing two runs over six solid frames on April 18th.

Richardson (4-4) actually fell behind in the top of the first, giving up a run on a single, a walk, an error, and an RBI fielder's choice by Caleb Stewart. Portland would rally in the bottom of the inning when Bell's home run was followed by a walk and a single, then an RBI double by DH Mark Wagner and a run-scoring ground-out by 3B Andrew Pinckney.

The 'Dogs would strike for three more runs in the last of the 4th against Mets starter Jose Sanchez (4-4). Pinckney reached on an error to lead-off the inning. C John Otness singled before CF Mickey Hall struck out and SS Iggy Suarez flied to center. That's when Bell struck again, driving a 2-run triple to right-centerfield. He was then doubled-home by 2B Tony Granadillo, who finished with his 3rd multi-hit game of the homestand.

Mike James (2.2ip, one hit) and Daniel Bard (1.0ip, 1K) closed the door with 3.2 scoreless innings in relief of Richardson. The duo combined to allow just one hit, ultimately retiring the final seven batters in a row.

Portland improves to 31-19 on the season while the Mets fall to 24-26. The teams will play game two of their three-game series Wednesday night at 6:00pm. LHP Tommy Hottovy (1-0, 5.00) will take on RHP Eric Brown (2-3, 6.33)
