St. Paul, MN - The Sioux Falls Canaries (10-9) moved into second place with a 4-3 victory over the St. Paul Saints (9-11) on Thursday night at Midway Stadium.

The Canaries drew first blood when newcomer Bubba Smith singled to score Ralph Santana in the opening frame. With Abner Arroyo hustling toward the plate, Smith was caught trying to stretch his hit into a double, and the inning ended before Arroyo could score. After one inning the Canaries led, 1-0.

The Birds added to their lead in the second inning. Dennis Anderson led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Hall. Hall's 25th RBI of the season gave the Canaries a 2-0 lead.

In the third inning Jose Torres hit his fifth homer of the season, and first for the Saints. The former Lincoln Saltdog cut the Canaries lead in half, 2-1.

Bubba Smith delivered his first homer for the Canaries in the fourth inning. Smith's home run put the Canaries up by a score of 3-1.

In the sixth inning, Chad Hermansen touched them all on his 14th homer of the season to give the Canaries a 4-1 lead.

The Saints came back in the seventh inning. Rob Fischer singled and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Steve Butler doubled to score Fischer, and Adam Olow singled to score Butler. The pair of runs left the Canaries holding on to a 4-3 lead.

The Canaries bullpen held the lead with Matt Montgomery saving his fourth game of the season. Doug Johnson (5-5) got the win and Justin Lord (8-2) suffered the loss.

The teams will continue the series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. _______________________________________________
