November 2, 2013 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Austin Bruins News Release
The first-place Austin Bruins (12-3-0) made a big statement with a huge weekend sweep of a red-hot Kenai River Brown Bears (12-5-0) team. The Bruins completed the sweep with a 3-1 victory Saturday night in front of 1,487 fans at Riverside Arena.
Kenai River jumped out to an early lead on the power-play when Albin Karlsson (Uppsala, Sweden) scored his second of the weekend. The Bruins outshot the Brown Bears 11-8 in the first period, but trailed 1-0 at the first intermission.
After the Bruins Brian Bachnak (Brownstown, MI) fought the Brown Bears Sam Bratten (Fairbanks, AK) in the middle of the second, Lucas Kohls (Forest Lake, MN) tied the game with his second goal of the weekend. Kohls fired a one-timer past Kenai River goalie Zach Quinn (Westland, MI) from the slot on a nice centering pass from Brennan Sanford (Holt, MI). Late in the period, the Bruins took the lead on the power-play when Simon Petersson (Sweden) scored his first career goal on a wrist-shot from the point. Austin lead 2-1 after two periods.
The Bruins played much better in the third period of Saturday s game than it played in Friday s third period. The highlight of the period was a pretty pass from Jay Dickman (Shoreview, MN) to a wide-open Josh Bretner (N. Potomac, MD) who put away a short-handed goal to give the Bruins the 3-1 lead. That would end up being the final score, as Austin picked up a big sweep to stay unbeaten at home (5-0). Nick Lehr made 22 saves in his league-leading 11th win of the season.
The next time the Bruins will play the Brown Bears will be February 6th-8th up in Kenai, AK for a three game weekend series. The Bruins hit the road Wednesday for a showdown with the Minnesota Wilderness in Cloquet, MN, then hosts the Bismarck Bobcats next weekend at Riverside Arena Friday and Saturday night. All games this week start at 7:05pm and can be seen on fasthockey.com or heard on 1480AM KAUS.
