Bruno Heppell retires

Montreal, Mar. 3, 2005 - Montreal Alouettes' fullback Bruno Heppell has decided to put an end to his football career.
After an eight-year career with the Alouettes, Heppell, 33, has decided to hang up his cleats, still coping with a hamstring injury that he suffered last Sept. 25 in a game against the Blue Bombers in Winnipeg.
"At this point in my career, and keeping in mind my actual physical condition, I judged it was time for me to retire," said Bruno Heppell. "I am very satisfied with the career I have had with the Alouettes and I will always be proud to be associated with this organization."
The Alouettes are also proud of their association with Bruno Heppell. "Bruno has always been a great ambassador not only for the Montreal Alouettes, but for football in Quebec and in Canada," said President and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Larry Smith. "Bruno Heppell will always be part of the Alouettes' family and we wish him the best of luck in all his future endeavours."
"Bruno has been the ultimate team player from the time he was drafted by this organization in 1997," said General Manager Jim Popp. "Though Bruno's health may not allow him to play again, he will always be a part of the Alouettes family. Merci beaucoup Bruno!"
''I have always considered Bruno as one of my most reliable warriors,'' said Head Coach Don Matthews. ''He put it all out on the field and gave everything he had. We will miss him in the locker room and on the turf.''
Drafted by the Alouettes in the third round, 21st overall, of the 1997 CFL draft, Heppell started as a special teams leader with the Alouettes. He became the starting fullback in 2000 when Michael Soles retired. Several running backs for whom he blocked had great success, including the best in CFL history, Mike Pringle. Heppell helped the Alouettes to a 2002 Grey Cup victory, and was twice named to the CFLPA East Division All-Star team over consecutive seasons in 2001 and 2002.
