Bruins Win First of Season

The Austin Bruins were back in action on day two of the North American Hockey League Showcase. The Bruins battled the Corpus Christi Ice Rays from Southern Texas. The opening frame from the Schwan's Super Rink the Bruins got off to a quick start. Just 28 seconds in John Simonson tallied his first goal of the season, Brandon Wahlin and Chris Fischer had assists. The Bruins were able to kill off four penalties in the first period. CJ Smith found some open ice while killing a penalty and put the Bruins up 2-0, Brandon Wahlin added his second assist of the night. The second period Corpus Christi scored a power play goal to make it a 2-1 score. Later in the second Riley Colvard fought Michael Economos as his first fight in the North American League was a success. At the end of two the Bruins had a 2-1 lead. The Rays were able to cash in early in the third just 24 seconds in. The rest of third both teams combined for just 5 shots on net. At the end of regulation the score was 2-2. The overtime period concluded with just one shot the entire period. In the shootout it was Colton Kramer the veteran from Sioux City Iowa who scored in the 5th round as the Bruins won their first game of the season. Austin will play their third game of the Showcase against the Johnstown Tomahawks tomorrow night at 7:45. You can catch the broadcast at Fast Hockey.com for live play by play.
